The need for these interventions has arisen from the renovation project of the main archaeological and cultural centre of the Ionian coast of Cosenza, fitting it with new exhibition solutions, multimedia capabilities, laboratories, educational areas and a new structure to be used as a storage facility for archaeological findings.

The main and most important intervention focuses on the creation the “Ippodameo” museum area.

The new spatial and volumetric articulation of the museum area and the new archaeological warehouses aims to improve the structural,  functional and distribution features of both facilities.

The layout of the two structures has been rearranged, following a principle of clear and simple distribution of specific areas, in order to create a seamless exhibition path.

The two structures are connected by the external coating, consisting of a continuous enveloping layer, devised as an “outer skin” of wooden sunshades mounted on a metal frame that runs continuously over the outer walls. This layer surrounds and encloses the two buildings, allowing them to partially “appear” on the outside. The exhibition route crosses the rooms of the existing museum and leads into the new “Ippodameo” museum, where three multimedia rooms will be set up: each of them will display the story of Sibari. The new museum “Ippodameo” was conceived as a natural continuation and progression of the existing museum. It consists of a central block, structured on two levels: the upper level features three multimedia rooms, characterized by individual colour palettes and fitted into the uninterrupted wooden texture; the ground floor features the control rooms, the warehouse, the office area and the bathrooms. The two levels are connected by a staircase, where light is brought in by a large window.
