PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS

The intervention focuses on the “Completion of road interventions for the elimination of interferences on the Bari – Altamura – Matera railway line with the urban road system within the city of Bari”.

This is a highly strategic project, as it devises both an upgrade to the railway line, taking into account an average population traffic of over 700 passengers/day, and an improved access point to the Policlinico in Bari: thanks to a railway stop bearing the same name, the Policlinico will benefit from greater transport capacity, and from seamless road traffic circulation, after the dismantling of the level crossing in Via delle Murge and the creation of a substitute roadway system.

The interventions devised in the general project have been separated into two macro-groups:

1) Interventions on the railway track, including the upgrade of the line stretching from Bari Policlinico station to the new Bari S. Andrea stop,  and its related signalling interventions;

2) Works on the road grid, for the reorganization and/or integration of the road network close to the railway line, which have become a necessity to compensate for the dismantling of level crossings, as well as the relocation of the S. Andrea stop near the RFI station currently under construction.

The intervention, which also includes a easily accessible stop created for the Villaggio dei Lavoratori, is crucial to the “upgrade and improvement of the Bari-Altamura-Matera line”. It is necessary to guarantee a good trasnfer capacity to compensate for the inconveniences caused by the railway track interment works at Modugno station.

Track-doubling between the Bari Policlinico and the Bari S. Andrea stops represents a progression of the previous phase of interventions, consisting of track-doubling between the Bari Scalo and Bari Policlinico stops, both of which are conceived as part of the general interventions for upgrading and improving the Bari-Matera railway line and the Bari-Toritto subway section.

This track doubling section accounts for a total extension of about 2,850 meters, equal to the distance between the Bari Policlinico station and the new Bari Sant’Andrea stop.

In addition to the works strictly related to the railway track, the lot includes all necessary interventions for the elimination of interferences through the urban road system, consisting in the dismantling of two level crossings (Strada Santa Caterina and Via delle Murge) and the works directly (railway overpass) or indirectly (integration and reorganization of the existing road system, following the dismantling of the level crossings) connected to this operation.

The intervention is devised as part of the CIPE Resolution 62/2011 – “Upgrade and improvement of the Bari/Matera railway line and Toritto/Bari subway section – Lot IV Track-Doubling Bari Policlinico – Bari S. Andrea”.
