The project connects the waterfront to the seaport area with an integrated connection system made of pathways (both for pedestrians and bicycles) and new urban spaces with an open view of the sea. Two large squares are connected by a monument staircase and an urban garden on several levels, accompanied by a scenic downpour of luminous water. These liquid forms, connecting land and sea, bear the unmistakable style of Iraqi celebrity architect Zaha Hadid.
The interventions include the construction of the “Panoramic Promenade”, two squares on different levels, a connecting staircase between the two squares, the requalification of the historical Zerbi pinewood, a new bus terminal and a parking area.
The Panoramic Promenade is one of the most important interventions, as it represents the connection seam between the waterfront and the seaport: it has been devised as a “linear garden” that would breathe new life in a neglected area. The path branches off along the Zerbi pinewood and the two-squares system, culminating in a crossing bridge over the banks of the Annunziata river.
The two squares, placed on different levels, represent a “new urban attraction”, and are connected by a staircase designed as an urban garden, developed over several levels. Green terraces and wide steps make up the walk and form an integrated unitary system.
The intervention also includes the redevelopment of the Zerbi pinewood. It consists in the restoration of existing trees, the planting of new essences, the maintenance of areas covered in grass and the installation of urban furniture and adequate lighting.
A bus terminal has also been constructed: a sort of closed ribbon with a winding and curvy shape that is open on the sides, to allow an open view on the seafront.
The new parking lots have been placed in the neglected area of a former State Railways warehouse.
They are angled parking lots with parking spots arranged in a comb pattern. They feature a grass paving that promotes soil permeability and a better integration with teh surrounding greenery. A solar panel system has been installed on the canopies to produce energy while providing shade to the parking area.
The access and exit pedestrian paths are positioned at the edge of the parking area, protected by concrete steps that ensure complete safety.
