The main urgent intervention focused on the roofing: the Marseille tiles that covered the main roof were removed, and the wooden planking, thas was completely worn down by rainwater ingress, was rebuilt. Subsequently, the load-bearing wooden beams were consolidated by applying anti-wormwood treatment and inserting fiber-based material to avoid replacement.
In addition to the main nave, the roofing of the side chapels were also reconstructed. The cathedral façades cleaning has brought to light the texture and the different features of the stone materials, allowing us to pinpoint and identify all architectural stratifications and influences that came together over time.
The cement castings from previous insertions were cleaned, followed by the removal of the oxidized ironheads from previous reinforced cement insertions; they were then protected with anti-corrosion products and shielded from weather with tuff blocks carved and modelled onsite. The works on the façades have also included the reconstruction of the plasterwork located on the arches of the building side facing Piazza Duomo.
The recovery and restoration works on the roofings also involved those in the choir area, the sacristy and the Archivi Capitolari: when the roofs protecting the choir were removed, it was possible to gaze at a decorative facing made of small rising arches that followed the eaves’ incline.
